Lunch Walk Log, 8 June

Spotted and overheard:

A man on the phone using the term "unalive" unironically
--To paraphrase, "Are you staying up at night because you think you're unalive"

A man carrying a bottle of off-brand DayQuil and a can of white Monster energy drink

An extremely Swedish looking couple having (what sounded like) an argument outside of a Sweetgreen

Three Thoughts on the World Baseball Classic Final

I watched almost none of the tournament besides from the 5th inning on in the championship, but still:

1. Nolan McLean squaring up to become the next Great Mets Pitcher Who Gets No Run Support
2. Bryce Harper tying the game and getting to feel important for an inning or so, then losing
2a. Celebrated a little too much too early rounding third there, fella
3. ...I mean we stole their president like a month ago--makes it hard to "root, root, root for the home team" (ok, two-and-a-half months; point still stands)

A New Local Business

If you're gonna make the name that silly, you'd better put an item like Yabba Dabba Doobies on the menu.

But also, good to see that Michael Flynn and Roger Stone are making something of themselves through the city's CREATE program!

Lunch Options

Y'ever been sitting at your desk, trying to figure out where to go for lunch, when suddenly you realize:
It's Meatball F🍝🍝🍝 in' Wednesday.

What's Worse?

Looking like a Guy Who Memorizes Area Codes in front of your co-workers because you knew what area 619 covered?
or
Admitting to your co-workers that you don't memorize area codes; you just know where 619 is because it's a professional wrestler's finishing move and he's from the San Diego area?

(Rey Mysterio, Jr., for the record)

A truly immersive gaming experience

Feels appropriate that I would forget to charge the GameCube controller, so I had to play Chibi-Robo plugged in.

Ranked Choice is a Good Idea

And here's mine for the primary, since no one asked:

1. Myrie
Universal after-school programs are a great idea, and he seems like a genuinely good person
2. Lander
For anyone who's looking for "leadership experience"--also saw him this winter at the Brooklyn Public Library, at a talk about labor, so that's another plus
3. Mamdani
Probably getting the most votes otherwise, and free buses is a good idea, but the thing I like about ranked choice is that you don't have to vote for the one person you think will most likely win--you can put the candidates you like the most first and then get to the "favorites" lower down
4. Blake
Legendary first debate performance; sorely missed in the second
5. A. Adams
There's something to be said about serving as City Council Speaker, but I'm not a fan of getting big funding from delivery app PACs

Had a Real Costanza Moment at Strand

But I swear I bought the book first! See look it's hot the little bookmark up there!!

P.S. One of the last things I did before the pandemic broke out--stretching "last things" to mean "around a month before"--was go to Coogan's after working the Millrose Games.

I do remember Elle Purrier bringing the Wanamaker Mile trophy into the bar, although, no word on if she or any other pros enjoyed any cold ones out of it (I wasn't about to peer over to where the pros were hanging out--gotta keep the stagehands separate from the stars).

Also bought this one, because I was a big The Hush Sound fan in high school and college (and then a Gold Motel fan, and then a Springtime Carnivore fan).

Didn't Give a Full Ocular Pat down, and It Cost Me

Today at lunch I walked past a guy wearing a T-shirt that said:

Two things I'll always be...honest and in some Nikes

But by the time I had read the shirt, it was too late to look all the way down to tell if he was a liar.

Is That How You Clean It?

So I'm getting out of the subway and I see a guy carrying his dry cleaning--and right in the middle of all the hangers is a hockey jersey.

And I had to wonder, is that how you're supposed to clean them? It's been a while since I've used any athletic department laundry facilities, but I feel like the staff at Conte Forum just...threw them in the washer with everyone else's gear?

Whether dry cleaning is or is not the right way to wash a hockey jersey, what's more important is that it was a rangers jersey, so either way, he's not gonna need that one for a few months! (Let's go Devils, clap, clap, clap clap clap, Marty's better, and so on and so forth.)

This is Either the Best Hat or the Worst Hat

...for going to see Eephus.

Best because it's a vintage-looking baseball hat, so a e s t h e t i c a l l y it fits in.

Worst because it's a Yankees hat, and the film takes place in Massachusetts, so I'mma bet most of the characters would hate the Bronx Bombers.

(Third opinion: Wearing any brimmed hat in a movie theater is the worst, because you could be blocking the view for the person behind you.)

📝🤾‍♂️🗑️

There has to be some possibility that somewhere out there--maybe at a periodical like the Post--that a sportswriter had a pre-written article for if the Mets did not re-sign their first baseman, and they look at their screen today and, with a mix of sadness and joy, delete the headline:

ALONSO MOURNING

(Sadness that they didn't get to print the headline, joy that he's back, back in the New York groove)

Take a Knee

It's a real trip going from watching Kneecap to checking the scores of the college football championship -- from supporting the Irish to hoping they get crushed in a span of about 10 minutes.

Next Business Venture

Would you believe no one in NYC--to date, as far as I can tell--has opened a restaurant called New York Satay?

I'm sticking with the G Train

I had to take the 1 train somewhere today--here have been my options for cars so far:

Car 1:
Teens, aka youths, playing music on a Bluetooth speaker

Car 2:
Puke or some kind of spilled chicken thing right in front of one of the doors

Car 3:
Half of the lights are working
